On October 22, 1895, a series of express train operated by Chemins de fer de l'Ouest which consists of a steam locomotive No. 721 carrying three freight cars, postal carriages, and six passenger carriages, runs from Granville to Montparnasse Paris. Granville train has left on time at 8:45 am, but a few minutes late as it approached Montparnasse Paris.

Trying to catch up time, machinist decided to increase the speed of a steam train carrying 131 passengers. But when the train enters the station, the train was running too fast, with a speed of 40-60 kilometers per hour. Locomotive machinist fined 25 francs as it nears the station too fast. One machine builders fined 50 francs for being too busy with documents and failed to apply the handbrake. He is also serving a prison sentence for two months
