     On October 22, 1895, a series of express train operated by Chemins de fer de l'Ouest which consists of a steam locomotive No. 721 carrying three freight cars, postal carriages, and six passenger carriages, runs from Granville to Montparnasse Paris. Granville train has left on time at 8:45 am, but a few minutes late as it approached Montparnasse Paris.

     Trying to catch up time, machinist decided to increase the speed of a steam train carrying 131 passengers. But when the train enters the station, the train was running too fast, with a speed of 40-60 kilometers per hour. Unfortunately, air brake Westinghouse does not work, and without sufficient braking, the momentum of the train just slowed down a little by the buffer, and the locomotive still drove crashed into the pavement station width of almost 30 meters, then crashed into the wall of the station as thick as 60 centimeters, before falling to the street (Place de Rennes) 10 meters below, where the locomotive was standing with his nose. A woman who is keeping the newsstand her husband died crushed by rubble walls; and two passengers, a mechanic and two train crew as well as a pedestrian injury.


     The woman who died was named Marie-Augustine Aguilard, while maintaining kiosk replaces her husband who was going to collect the evening paper. Railway company finance the funeral and provide funds for their two children.
     Locomotive machinist fined 25 francs as it nears the station too fast. One machine builders fined 50 francs for being too busy with documents and failed to apply the handbrake. He is also serving a prison sentence for two months
     Carriage of passengers are not moved easily damaged. But it took forty-eight hours before a judicial investigation allows the locomotive moved. An attempt was made to move the locomotive and tender with fourteen horses, but this failed. A winch (hoist) 250 tons with ten men, eventually managed to reduce the locomotive to the ground and then raised the tender back to the station. When the locomotive reaches the railway workshop, known only suffered minor damage.
     For four days, the locomotive and the tender was left standing outside the station, attracting a crowd of curious spectators.
