The New World Shopping Center in Bangkok, Thailand, has been abandoned and no longer in use since 1997. But is not used anymore? Who lived four floors of the building without a roof and it has become a haven for many species of fish. How did it happen?
Mall which was built in 1982, originally as high as 11 floors and very visible because of soaring in the surrounding area. But then it was revealed that in fact the developers only had permission to build a four-storey building. In 1997, Thailand's Supreme Court ordered the demolition of seven floors in the mall and it left a gaping hole in the roof. Over the years, the rain changed the ground floor of the mall into a shallow pond, and then become a breeding ground for mosquitoes.
To counter the problem of mosquitoes, residents in the vicinity buy fish from many different species and is released in the mall that has become the pond to feed on mosquitoes and larvae. In addition to local residents, only a few people know about the fish pond at the mall until recently when photographs of the fish pond uploaded to Facebook, and make a lot of people flock to the former mall. City officials are concerned about security of visitors because of the buildings considered vulnerable to collapse.
The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has now decided to catch all the fish there and remove water from the building.
