Just before death - even near death, many people reported seeing a bright light like. This experience raises questions in the minds of scientists, what causes it?
In a recent study, as reported by the BBC, Tuesday (13/08/2013), scientists revealed that the bright light is seen when approaching death (called NDE: Near Death Experience) may be triggered by a surge of electrical activity in the zone of the brain responsible for vision.
"Many people think the brain is not active or present in low activity (hypoactive) after a person is medically pronounced dead. We show if it were not such a thing happens," said Dr. Jimo Borjigin from the University of Michigan who is the lead author of the study.
"In fact, the brain becomes more active just before death than when the person is still alive," added Borjigin who published the results of his research in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
Research Methods
Borjigin and colleagues monitored the brain activity of nine rats were dying. Thirty seconds after the heart stops beating, high-frequency brain waves called gamma oscillations apparently jumped.
The wave is one of the features that supposedly supports the nerves in the human consciousness, especially when acts combine information from different parts of the brain. In mice, brain activity is actually higher than the heart stops shortly after waking.
According Borjigin, the same thing may also happen in humans. Increased brain activity and consciousness can trigger visions just before death or when subjected to suspended animation.
"It can provide a framework to help clarify (the experience of seeing light when near death). Fact that someone saw the light before his death indicate that the visual cortex in the brain have high activity," said Borjigin.
Celebration last
Responding to the results of this research, Jason Braithwaite of the University of Birmingham found this phenomenon a kind of "last celebration" by the brain. These findings demonstrate that the opinion was believed for a long time, ie in abnormal conditions, brain activity can be increased.
Dr. Chris Chambers from Cardiff University said, "still very little is known about mortality in humans. This interesting finding may open the door to further studies in humans alone."
"But we also have to be very careful before drawing conclusions about the near-death experience in humans. Should be measured brain activity in rats during heart had stopped to find out the relationship with the human experience," he added.
